Johan Smuts (-2015)[] was a professor and researcher in [[Afrikaans]] literature.

He spent number of years as a teacher of Afrikaans, working for the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal and the Faculty of Education at the University of Stellenbosch, before being appointed as a lecturer in the Departement Afrikaans en Nederlands ("Department of [[Afrikaans]] and [[Dutch]] department at the university in 1971. In 1986 he was made professor, serving as chair of the Department from 1989 to 1991, and retiring in 1994. He played an important role as a member and, for a while chairman, of the literary commission of the [[Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns]] (1990 to 2007).

An avid researcher, he wrote extensively on Afrikaans prose and drama. Of particular importance for theatre studies have been his many "dramakronieke" ("drama chronicles") in the ''[[Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe]]'' (''[[Journal of Social Sciences]]'') and a contribution on the [[Afrikaans]] drama in ''Die Afrikaanse literatuur sedert sestig'' (1980), a literary history edited by [[T T. Cloete]]. A selection of his many reviews have been published in the book ''Burgerband'' (1985).

With his wife and colleague, [[Ria Smuts]], he published a number of collections of short stories and dramas for school use. verantwoordelik vir die saamstel van verskillende bloemlesings uit die letterkunde vir gebruik in die onderrig van letterkunde. Hy het ook 'n laat debuut as kortverhaalskrywer gemaak toe hy in 2012 saam met sy vrou Ria die kortverhaalbun-del Die water wat verby is gepubliseer het. 'n Volgende kortverhaalbundel Die helder oomblik is tans ter perse.

Johan Smuts sal ook onthou word vir sy werk as lid van die Letterkundekommissie van die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, vanaf 1990 tot 2007. Vir die laaste vyf jaar van hierdie periode was hy voorsitter van die Letterkundekommisie wat die bedrywighede van die kommissie met 'n ferm maar soepel hand hanteer het. Hiervoor het hy in 2007 'n oorkonde van die SA Akademie ontvang. Sy kundigheid oor die Afrikaanse letterkunde is ook ingespan in die beoordeling van 'n hele spektrum ander literêre toekennings soos die Perskorprys, die Ou Mutual-prys, die Nasionale Pers-pryse (waaronder die W. A. Hofmeyr-prys), die CNA-prys en die M-Net-prys. In 1990 was hy as beoordelaar betrokke by die eerste romanwedstryd, uitgeskryf deur De Kat, waar skrywers manuskripte ingeskryf het en wat gewen is deur Alexander Strachan met die manuskrip van Die jakkalsjagter. Ook as keurder vir uitgewers het hy sy merk op die Afrikaanse literêre toneel gemaak. As beoordelaar en keurder kon daar altyd staatgemaak word op sy wye belesenheid, sy gesofistikeerde smaak en haas onfeilbare sin vir gehalte.

Een van Johan Smuts se bekendste artikels was "Slot en sleutels" oor Etienne Leroux se roman Sewe dae by die Silbersteins. 'n Mens sou dié titel kon deurtrek na sy werk as literator: dit wat hy tot stand gebring het met sy onderrig in en navorsing oor die Afrikaanse letterkunde was vir sy talle studente en die lesers van sy werk nie "slotte" nie, maar "sleutels" wat 'n ganse intellektuele rykdom ontsluit het.
