[[Hans van Heerden]] studied in Vienna. He became principal baritone at the opera houses of Ulm, Bonn, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, as well as making guest appearances throughout Germany. He returned to South Africa in the early 1970s. In 1978 he was appointed head of opera for [[PACOFS]] and since 1991 he was head of the Opera School of the erstwhile Pretoria Technikon. He has appeared in a wide variety of roles in South Africa: for [[CAPAB]] in [[Der Fliegende Hollander]] and [[Fidelio]], for [[PACOFS]] in the [[Tales of Hoffmann]], [[Carmen]] and [[Nabucco]], for [[PACT]] as Jokanaan in [[Salome]] and Friederich von Telramund in [[Lohengrin]] to name a few. He also played the role of Pritschitsch in [[The Merry Widow]] for [[PACT]] and Baron Scarpia in [[Tosca]] for [[PACOFS]].
