==History==
Building of the City Hall began in 1897. It has a distinctive Victorian architectural style. The clock tower was named the Victoria Tower in honour of Queen Victoria. The building was designed by Edwin Page and was inaugurated on 5 October 1899.

This structure was recognised as a National Monument until 1914, when East London was declared a formal city. Thereafter, this became the official City Hall.

The City Hall complex consists of an auditorium, complete with stage and dressing-rooms, seating 937 persons in the lower auditorium and 240 in the upper gallery. Adjoining the auditorium is the Minor Hall, used for dances, bazaars and receptions. The mayoral parlours, the council chamber and committee room and the town clerk's offices are all housed in the City Hall.
