Listed as "[[John Brougham]]" in the ''Index'' to [[F.C.L. Bosman]]'s 1980 study, but this is uncertain, since some of Bosman's references are to someone simply referred to as Btougham, while others are clearly to the prominent 19th century playwright [[John Brougham]].

He visited Cape Town, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth in 1873, as part of Disney Roebuck's touring company. Usually simply billed as [[Brougham]], he started ioout in small supporting roles, and gradually rpogessed to more substantial roles, e.g.
