Studied at the [[Stellenbosch Gymnasium]], and later the [[University of Stellenbosch]]. An immensely popular character in Stellenbosch, he became an English  teacher in 1942 and then in the early 1970s became a Senior Lecturer in English in the Education Faculty and in the 1990s the Journalism department at the [[University of Stellenbosch]].
