Caplan graduated from [[Rhodes University]] with a B.Mus (hons) in History and Theory of Western Music in 1997. In 1993 he was a member of Professor [[Andrew Tracy]]'s Steelband.

Anthony Caplan is South African composer who works in the African music tradition. He has composed a number of works including ''[[The Moon Prince]]'', ''Symphony Makuvatsine'' and ''[[Men-Jaro]]''.

''[[The Moon Prince]]'' was written for Co-Opera with librettist [[Gwyneth Lloyd]].

''[[Men-Jaro]]'' was commissioned as a dance piece by choreographer [[Vincent Mantsoe]] and uses only African instruments. It premiered in 2006 in Johannesburg and has been performed internationally.
