 Avraham (Albert) Ninio was born in Alexandria, Egypt on 25 December 1918 to an Italian father and a Turkish mother.  In 1927 his family immigrated to what was then Palestine and as a young adult he studied acting and directing at the Actors Studio and at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.  Back in Israel he became an acclaimed stage director associated with the Habima National Theatre in Tel Aviv.  He was married to Hannah (Chana) Ben-Ari, who was an announcer on Kol Israel and went on to become head of the drama department.  He died on 17 May 1985.  The film, television and stage director Ron Ninio is their son.
