== Founding ==

The Department and ministry was created under Nelson Mandela as part of the new ANC led government in 1994. The ministers were Ben Ngubane (1994-1997) and Oswald Mtshali (1998-1999)

It is this department that commissioned the [[White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage]] in 1996 which led to the founding of the [[National Arts Council of South Africa]]

On 1 August 2002 the [[Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology]] (DACST) was divided into separate Departments:
