Described as a "blyspel in een bedryf vir 6 here en 1 dame" ("a comedy in one act for six gentlemen and a lady"), the piece was originally written in a version of [[Cape Dutch]] and published as ''[[Hoe oom Jacob Hoogvlieg gefopt werd]]'' in Pretoria by the [[ZA Nieuwsblad Maatschappij]] in 1904.

The original text was was followed by two other versions, in which the language was updated, now appearing under the titles ''[[Hoe oom Jacob Hoogvlieg gefop werd]]'' ([[De Bussy]], Pretoria, 1916) and ''[[Hoe oom Jacob Hoogvlieg gefop werd]]'' ([[HAUM]], Cape Town, 1916) and ''[[Hoe oom Jakob Hoogvlieg gefop werd]]''.
