South African Guild of Actors
The South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) is a labour union representing actors in the film, television, stage, commercial and corporate sectors in South Africa. Its aims are to enhance actors' working conditions, compensation and benefits and to be a unified voice on behalf of artists' rights. It was founded after an an open meeting held at the Actors' Centre at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre on the 23rd February 2009, organised by Carlyn De Waal, Stacy Koma and Zane Meas, who chaired the meeting. This was followed by a subsequent meeting in Cape Town, where the formation of a South African Guild of Actors was formally accepted and at a follow-up meeting interim officials were elected, to register SAGA as a trade union.
SAGA is affiliated to the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA)[1], through its partnership with UASA (formerly known as United Association of South Africa)[2]. SAGA was elected to membership of FIA (the International Federation of Actors), which consists of actors’ organisations from nearly 70 countries, including British Equity and SAG-AFTRA in the USA.
In 2017 they represented the industry in the Parliamentary debate to make an oral deposition concerning the Copyright Amendment Bill.
