The Struggle

“The Struggle” or “The Liberation Struggle” normally refers to all the processes by which the “non-white” population of South Africa fought for political freedom over the course of the 20th century, but more specifically it is often used to refer to those events sparked by the Sharpeville shootings (1960) and the 1976 uprisings, which would culminate in the negotiations of 1989-90, the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as first president of a democratic South Africa (1994) and the new constitution (1996). This includes the armed struggle and the Cultural struggle.
