This was founded in 1947 at the instigation of Mrs E Hoogenhout, wife of the then Administrator of the Protectorate. It played an influential role in the cultural life of the region. From the beginning the Association also involved itself in the performing arts. In this respect the Association, under the chairmanship of the dynamic Olga Levinson, actively petitioned for and obtained a civic theatre for Windhoek. The Windhoek Civic Theatre was opened on 3 October 1960, and was managed by the SAAA until 1973, when it was handed over to the South West African Performing Arts Council (SWAPAC) for their management and use.
