Miss in her Teens, or, The Medley of Lovers is a farce by David Garrick (1717–1779)[1]. Also known simply as Miss in her Teens.


The original text

A farce about a young woman, Miss Biddy, and her various suitors, written in 1746, first performed on January 17, 1747 at Covent Garden and later at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Published by J. and R. Tonson in 1747 under the full title of Miss in her Teens, or, The Medley of Lovers, and described as "a farce in two acts and in prose". Republished a number of times.


Translations and adaptations

Translated and adapted into Dutch by Ward Bingley (1757–1818)[2] as Het Zestienjarig Meisje ("The sixteen year old girl")

Another (informal?) Dutch translation of the title is Het Meisje boven de Tien (lit. "The girl above ten") as cited by Bosman[3] (1928: p. 76).

South African performances

1808: Performed by the Garrison Players on 10 September in the African Theatre, with The Rivals (Sheridan), and a variety programme including songs and gymnastic presentations (the latter billed as "by students of Astley"). The evening is a benefit for the widows and orphans of the 89th Regiment. Bosman[4] (1928: p.76) cites the titles from a Dutch advert, as De Medeminnaars and Het Meisje boven de Tien.

1824: Performed by the Garrison Players on 2 October in the African Theatre, with The Gamester (Moore).

1826: Performed in Simonstown by the Naval Amateur Company, consisting of officers from the HMS Owen Glendower, on Saturday 14 January, with The Busybody (Mrs Centlivre).

1827: Performed by the Garrison Players on 27 August in the African Theatre, after Monsieur Tonson (Moncrieff) and Amoroso (Planché).
