Jo-Marie Claassen (1940-) is a classicist, with an interest in drama.

Biography

Born Johanna Maria Latsky on 9 June 1940 in Cape Town. She studied at Stellenbosch University (BA in Latin and English, cum laude, 1960; MA in Latin, cum laude, 1970; Third major in Greek, 1972, PhD, 1986)

She was a teacher in the Stellenbosch University Latin Department (later Classics and then Ancient Studies) for about 34 years, retiring in 2001, but retaining the title Associate Professor Emerita.

Married to Pieter Eduard Claassen, she has a daughter and a son.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Besides writing a number of articles on the play, she also translated N.P. van Wyk Louw's Afrikaans verse play Germanicus into English. It was published as N.P. Van Wyk Louw: Germanicus translated and with an introduction in London by Dragonfly eBooks[1] in 2013.
