Ubuntu Linux System Administrator in J.S. Gericke Library at Stellenbosch University , Stellenbosch University. Studied at Durban University of Technology (Nat Dip T3, Electronics and Instrumentation 1984 – 1987). Married to Donna Newey (divorced in 2000), and has three children, Kirstin Mackrill, Amber Gibson, Heather Gibson. Joined the University of Stellenbosch in 2001 as IT specialist and from 2008 employed in the central campus library to assist on projects that include: SUNScholar (January 2008 to Present): an Institutional Research Repository for Stellenbosch University ;Libopedia: Library help wiki for Stellenbosch University; Maties Ubuntu: Campus help wiki for Ubuntu linux; SUNJournals: The implementation of a platform to host (open access) online journals is a collaborative effort between the Library and Information Service and departments and units affiliated with the University of Stellenbosch, in support of the mission and strategy of the University.

As part of the Libopedia project, he developed the original platform, trained the researchers, and was from its inception the Wiki System Administrator for ESAT.
