C.E. Richter

C.E. Richter (b.**/**/1904 - d.03/04/1965) was a police officer and one-off actor.

Biography

Though he was not an actor, Carl Eduard Richter nonetheless was one of only five individuals who appeared in Moedertjie (Joseph Albrecht/1931), the first Afrikaans-language sound film produced by African Film Productions. A constable at the time, he played the policeman who has arrested Moedertjie's son, the role taken by Pierre de Wet. Like everyone else involved, he received a Medal of Honour from the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Taal, Letterkunde en Kuns (dated 20 October 1931). He went on to become the bodyguard of four of South Africa's Prime Ministers. As Major Richter he was present when an attempt was made to assassinate Dr. H.F. Verwoerd at the Union Exposition at Milner Park in Johannesburg on 9 April 1960. He retired from the South African Police as Lieutenant-Colonel Richter and settled in Betty’s Bay. (FO)
